WebAbstract. There is a social or collective sense of ‘knowledge’, as used, for example, in the phrase ‘the growth of scientific knowledge’. In this paper I show that social knowledge does not supervene on facts about what individuals know, nor even what they believe or intend, or any combination of these or other mental states. WebLikewise the view that knowledge is the goal of science will imply that problem-solving and truth are legitimate goals for science, since pursuing these will further the pursuit of knowledge. So the difference between the views must turn on differences between these goals as ultimate or constitutive goals.
