Autotrophic bacteria convert ammonia into nitrite and then into nitrate under aerobic conditions; lightning converts large amounts of atmospheric nitrogen (N 2) directly to nitrate. The bacterial reduction of nitrate can also produce nitrite under anaerobic conditions.
